Obaseki in panic mode.

HE Godwin Obaseki

The Governor of Edo State, HE Godwin Obaseki few days ago 3rd June 2020, signed into law a Gazette banning social and political gathering of people more than 20 except expressly approved by him. The ban goes further to state that only the State Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium situated at the State centre Benin is allowed to host Political events in the State.

This is coming at a time the state is preparing for an election where even the Governor is a candidate. In a bid to prevent direct primaries as approved by his party the All Progressive Party APC, the Governor signed this Gazette in view of the advise from experts on the novel COVID-19 pandemic.

Political analyst had ask the question of why now? bearing in mind that few weeks back, the Governor justified why he is against lockdown. The answer is simple; the Governor is in a panic mode. Trying so hard to test his popularity in the field among other aspirants of his own political party.

Whether the State government can enact a law to prevent a Federal Organ of Government such as the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC from performing her statutory functions is yet to be seen. The days ahead will determine whether this exercise was worth tax payers money or not.
