The embattled Governor of Edo State had it all good in the beginning of his administration. The spillover effect of Oshiomhole’s goodwill went well for him to stabilize as a Governor. Not only was he given two notable men to help quell the antics of the opposition, Philip Shuabu his Deputy and Osarodion Ogie his Secretary to State, he was supported all through till all court cases challenging his election was dispensed with.
Road cleared and mines evacuated, the Governor settled for business of governance. This is the time for continuity and consolidation of the many robust and thoughtful programs of the previous administration that Mr Godwin Obaseki was part of.
The first huddle was the appointment of Commissioners and Special Advisers and Assistants to the government of Mr Godwin Obaseki in line with the provisions of the Constitution. Mr Governor did not take the idea of having Commissioners in all the 18 Local Government because he didn’t know people capable enough across the Local Governments. The Party insisted that he follow precedence by way of Leaders who knows those people in their respective areas to nominate them, this didn’t go down well with him but nothing he could do since it is Constitutional and he did not know anyone by himself.
Angry Obaseki decided to add a clause to his appointment of Special Assistants and Special Advisers since he was being forced to run against his conscience. He proclaimed that all Special Assistants from each Ward must remain in their Wards and monitor activities from there and reports to Head of his Economic Team and latter to Secretary to state Government. Brilliant idea and the Party loved it and sees it as opportunity to mobilize the grassroot for her government especially that part that says they must strive to win each of their Wards.
As election approaches , Mr Governor saw need to dislodge those who insisted he must follow the Constitutional provision of appointing people from each Local Government. He met a mother hen who would protect her chicks and not let them scatter.
November 2019, Steven Oshawo of Ward 10, Etsakor West Local Government Area, same Ward were Oshiomhole hails from led 9 members of the Ward to Suspend the National Chairman of the party against the remaining 17 Members who then proceeded to Pass Vote of Confidence on same Oshiomhole. But unfortunately, the Governor and his purported 18 Local Government Party Chairmen on November 12th, 2019 ratified the Oshiomhole’s suspension even as Steven Oshawo approached the Court to interpret the suspension.
At a gathering in December 2019, the Governor re-interates that the National Chairman remain suspended until he apologized. He went further to say he will tell him that him Mr Godwin Obaseki is the Governor of Edo State.
On March 4th, FCT High Court granted Oshawo’s request to suspend the National Chairman Adams Oshiomhole. This prompted the action National Secretary to declare self as the most senior NWC Member and therefore proclaim an invite for National Executive Council Meeting NEC to be held on 17th March, 2020.
The next day 5th March 2020, a FHC sitting in Kano under Justice Lewis Allagoa ordered that Oshiomhole remained the National Chairman and that the DSS and Police should provide him Security. This did not bother Victor Giadom the self acclaimed senior member of the National Working Committee NWC. He proceeded to obtain Order from a Lagos High Court.
On March 12th, 2020 the Governor of Edo State Mr Godwin Obaseki, called for a Consultative meeting of South-South APC. It has in attendance, Rotimi Amaechi, Festus Kayamo SAN, Dakuku Peterside and Sen Obende, Sen Uzamere and others from Edo State. Reading the Communiqué, the Governor said Mr Victor Giadom has been nominated to replace Adams Oshiomhole so as to have the sit retained in the South-South region of the Country. This was in view of the scheduled NEC slated for 17th.
This period one could deduced was the toughest Political period in Oshiomhole’s lifetime. Not even his 2007 election.
The Presidency intervened just as pressure mounted by Pro-Oshiomhole Governors who couldn’t know why some of their colleagues wanted Oshiomhole removed.
Oshiomhole, haven received respite and also victory from the Court of Appeal, called for truce among the NWC Members. He stoop and apologized to all who felt his style were too dictatorial to them.
Now his sit is secured, and Obaseki is the one in need of respite from the same man who he could not raise his kneel from his neck.
If Obaseki had succeeded in removing Oshiomhole then will he had been justified? Now that he Obaseki has been disqualified from contesting can he in on all fairness cry for justice? No!
